Patricia and Robert’s goal in 1997, and still to this day is to continue to
strengthen the bridge between allopathic medicine and Reiki. Their objective has
been to instruct healthcare professionals as well as lay people in the art and science
of Reiki that can be used as a stand alone practice or as a compliment to allopathic
medicine. They began to fulfill their objective in 1998 when they were asked to
teach a Reiki Level I class through University of New Mexico’s Nursing and Allied
Health Professional Development Program. The class provided licensed healthcare
professional with required continuing education units. During that first class
Patricia and Robert saw the broad and growing interest in the study of Reiki. In
attendance were nurses, an oncologist and a psychologist. The classes were carefully
taught as a science with the art simply woven throughout. Patricia and Robert were
trained in the traditional method of Usui Shiki Ryoho. Even though their students
are given all they need in Reiki Level I that is necessary to treat the self and
others, many desired to know more of the art and advanced methodology and progressed
with them through Reiki Level II and some to the Master Level. Patricia and Robert
recognized the diversity of their students were growing as some were clerics, a doctor
of oriental medicine, massage therapists, hospice volunteers, social workers, a doctor
of veterinary medicine, a mortgage lender, a dental hygienist, homemakers and many
others. Patricia and Robert wanted to create a more comfortable environment away from
the traditional classroom for their students to learn all three Reiki levels and
Kurama Institute of Natural Healing was founded in 1999.
Robert’s interest in cancer research and working with cancer survivors has been a
personal interest of his for years since his own father’s passing from stomach cancer
in 1977. Robert and Patricia joined an Albuquerque volunteer grassroots community
group called, Reaching out with Reiki (ROWR) for cancer survivors, founded by Kathy
Araki. ROWR is a project generated by a community of Reiki practitioners who are
taking a stand to introduce the beneficial effects of Reiki energy to communities
of people.
Robert and Patricia’s other goal has been to continue the work of Mrs. Takata, the
founding mother of what we know today as Reiki of the Western world. Mrs. Takata
was called in by many of her rural and far away patients in Hawaii to perform Reiki.
She trained many of the family members in Reiki to continue aiding in their loved
ones’ recovery after one of her extensive Reiki treatments was finished and had to
travel miles and miles to get back to her home and clinic. Robert and Patricia have
extended their teachings to include family training. They believe the family member
will have a much greater opportunity to heal, to feel loved and supported, and more
relaxed with the touch of Reiki also known as universal life force energy or
unconditional love from their loved one(s).
Patricia and Robert are public speakers and educators for healthcare organizations.
